Show 102: Unlocking Lyme Disease with Dr. William Rawls
Western medicine has improved their ability to test for and treat Lyme disease in the last few decades but much more progress is needed. Join Dr. William Rawls as he talks about the evolution of this tick-borne illness in human culture. The good doctor has focused on Lyme disease over time in response to his own struggle with the symptoms of the bacterial infection. He has written a number of books on the subject which he shared with the Practical Herbalist team.
Dr. Rawls approach to Lyme disease is unconventional as it includes integrated medicine. He discusses how complex the disease is and how this makes it a challenge for the medical field to treat. The “stealth microbe” of the Borrelia bacterial species may be living in its human host for years before the patient begins to show symptoms. Some people who are infected with Borrelia microbes show signs of illness at all. These fluctuations offer clues to dealing with Lyme disease.
To Dr. Rawls, chronic Lyme disease doesn’t have to overwhelm the patient. His personal experiences combined with his arduous research are encouraging. Dr. Rawls has a life long habit of “thinking outside the box” which serves him well in his personal search for clues to the mysteries of Lyme. There is much more to working with this disease than hitting it with antibiotics. Once again, we learn that our health is more complicated than we originally thought.
