Katja Swift and Ryn Midura
Katja Swift & Ryn Midura co-founded the CommonWealth Center for Holistic Herbalism in 2010. Each of them sees clients for individual consultations, and together they offer Family, Community, and Clinical herbalism training programs. They also offer training in business skills for holistic practitioners, because too many promising herbalists have given up on their dreams after “reality” got in the way. As a successful wife-and-husband team, herbalism is their full-time job: they can teach you how to make it yours, too!
Katja’s been in practice since 1999, and has been an herbalist in country & city settings. She’s lived in places where a women’s barter economy was the lifeblood of the community, and places where everyone has a side hustle going on to help pay the rent. She prides herself on being able to speak to anyone and meet them where they are, and find creative solutions to make the best of a difficult situation.
Ryn was teaching martial arts when he met Katja and she turned his world around, not least by introducing him to herbalism. Coming closer to the green world gave him ample reason to go play outside, and that combined with his love of exploring movement skills has naturally brought him to a focus on the intersections between movement and herbalism. He is always seeking new ways to integrate all the threads of a healthy lifestyle into an herbalism that can rightly be called holistic.
Today, Katja & Ryn teach primarily through online video courses. These are designed to be as close to “being there in person” as possible, while giving you the flexibility to learn on your own schedule. Every course is taught primarily through videos you can access on your computer or phone. There are accompanying audio files so you can review on the go, printable quick guides, and plenty of reference research to support your learning. Log in to weekly live Q&A sessions to ask your questions in person, or join the discussion threads integrated into every lesson: learn herbalism with community support!
In addition to their onlince courses, Katja & Ryn are the creators of The Holistic Herbalism Podcast, which currently has over 100 episodes and is available wherever podcasts are found.
Together, they’ve taught at national herbal conferences, including the American Herbalists Guild Symposium, the Traditions in Western Herbalism Conference, and Boston’s own Herbstalk. Articles by Ryn and Katja have appeared in the AHG Journal, the Journal of the Northeast Herbal Association, and Plant Healer Magazine.
