Candace said: I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to connect with herbs from a land so far north of my Pacific Northwest home in comparatively balmy Oregon. It turns out a goodly number of the medicinal plants covered in Icelandic Herbs and Their Medicinal Uses grow throughout at least the northern section of America, too. And…Róbertsdóttir’s entry on each one was engaging and useful. I loved the range of herbs covered, from tonic or food-grade plants up to those reserved for extremely rare and potent use if at all. Moreso, I loved that the in-between medicine, the plants just beyond beginning herbalist level but not generally reserved for quite advanced use. Herbs best used moderately often get limited if any coverage at all in modern herbals. In Icelandic Herbs and Their Medicinal Uses, Róbertsdóttir included good notes on how and when to use all the herbs, including a fine selection from the full range of herbal medicine.

Sue said: This book raises the bar for herbals. Róbertsdóttir has truly done her research. I first scanned the book and thought I would be most interested in the unfamiliar herbs. Come to find out, it was the author’s information on the herbs that I was most familiar with that brought me back. I was inspired to begin experimenting with a common weed in my own backyard that I had previously ignored.

Róbertsdóttir’s rounded approach matches The Practical Herbalist philosophy of pairing research with folklore. I will be using Icelandic Herbs and Their Medicinal Uses as a text for constant consultation for both classes and upcoming writings. Just a cursory glance at the index reveals how much work the author put into compiling this book. I believe that it was time well spent.

The bottom line: We give Icelandic Herbs and Their Medicinal Uses by Anna Rósa Róbertsdóttir 2 thumbs up.
