Even with the most attentive care, the animals in our lives can get hurt. Some of our beloved companions can be very tricky to treat. Birds will peck at their bandages. Cats will scratch at an infection. Horses will rub a sore spot raw. In order to help our friends, a little subterfuge is sometimes needed.

Mosquitoes are not my favorite part of summer. I know they serve as food for wildlife I prize but I resent the fact that mosquitoes consider my skin as a their prime picnicking grounds. This recipe does a fine job of keeping the critters at bay without the overpowering scent other mixes offer. This formula also works to repel other biting insects like gnats and fleas.

Summer is mosquito season in my neck of the woods. All of Oregon’s standing water during breeding season gives the nasty little buggers plenty of spaces to raise their families. An herbal tincture is an alcohol-based liquid into which the properties of one or more herbs have been infused. There are two basic ways to create an infused oil, the cold method or the hot method. The cold method, which is actually done at room temperature, takes time, but is relatively easy and requires little attention while the oil is soaking in the herb’s qualities. The hot method requires a direct heat source and close attention, but an infused oil can be prepared with this method within a relatively short period of time.

Collection bags are handy to have during harvest season. This project involves changing an old t-shirt into a collection bag that can be stuffed into a pocket until ready for use. These bags are great to have around when you happen to stumble upon an apple tree ripe and ready for the picking. They also come in handy for carrying beach towels, coloring books or sack lunches.
